8 family-friendly events to enjoy over Fourth of July weekend

From independence day celebrations to outdoor movies, have fun with the family throughout the holiday weekend.

By Michele Kettner June 30, 2021 at 4:55 pm

The Fourth of July is the quintessential summer celebration. If you are looking to have fun festivities other than a trip to the pool, here’s how your family can make merry over the holiday weekend.

Mosaic: Films in the Park

Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
Pack up a blanket and your favorite snacks for movie night in the park. This week’s film is a showing of Footloose. So, put on your dancing shoes for a rebellious night of dance. Strawberry Park: 2910 District Ave., Fairfax; free

Washington Spirit vs. Chicago Red Stars

Friday, 7 p.m.
Before the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team heads to Tokyo, catch some of your favorites in Leesburg. Holding the fourth overall spot in the NWSL, the Spirit will look to climb the standings with a win over the Red Stars. Segra Field: 19798 Sycolin Rd., Leesburg; $425-$100

Movies at the Pfitz

Saturday, 7 p.m.
Nothing says Fourth of July weekend like a showing of National Treasure. Instead of trying to steal the Declaration, enjoy a night under the stars at the ballpark. While you wait for the movie to start, enjoy fun games and local food trucks. Pfitzner Stadium Complex: 7 County Complex, Woodbridge; free

An American Celebration at Mount Vernon

Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Celebrate the Fourth with the first president. The annual day of fun includes daytime fireworks, hot air balloons, and classic songs from the 18th century. George Washington’s Mount Vernon: 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy., Mount Vernon; included with general admission

July 4th Drive-Thru Ice Cream Celebration

Sunday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Cool off during your outdoor fun with a delicious ice cream treat. As you wait for your dessert, enjoy patriotic tunes, giveaways and much more. Registration is required. McLean Community Center: 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean; free admission, in-district residents only

Independence Day at Franklin Park

Sunday, 5-10 p.m.
After your backyard barbecue, continue the party at the Franklin Park Arts Center. Your little ones will love the inflatables, scavenger hunt, and glitter tattoos. Top the night off with a spectacular fireworks display before heading back home. Franklin Park Arts Center: 36441 Blueridge View Ln., Purcellville; free

Mosaic Skateland

Through September 12, times vary
Grab your skates and head to the rink. Show your family how to boogie as you head out to the disco on wheels. Skate rentals and additional accessories will be available at the rink. Mosaic: 2910 District Ave., Fairfax
