5 family-friendly events to attend this weekend

From nature walks to a scavenger hunt, get in some quality family time before the big game at one of these events.

While the Super Bowl will be capping off the weekend fun, there is still plenty of time to have some fun with the family. From a bird walk along the water to a Valentine’s Day cake decorating class, here are five events to enjoy with the family this weekend.

Birds on the Boardwalk

Saturday, 8-10 a.m.
As the saying goes, the early bird gets worm. So, wake up early this Saturday to catch the different birds around Neabsco Creek. Bring along a pair of binoculars to identify the different local and migrating birds. // Neabsco Creek Boardwalk: 15125 Blackburn Road, Woodbridge; $10

Meet & Greet with Clyde the unicorn, Elsa & sledding

Saturday, noon-2 p.m.
Make your child’s Saturday extra magical with a meet and greet with Elsa. Families can meet Clyde the unicorn and the other ponies as they explore the farm and roast marshmallows. Photos are also available for purchase. // 19732 Hogback Mountain Road, Leesburg; $30-$65

Parent & Me Valentine’s Drip Cake with a Sugar Cookie Cake Topper

Sunday, 2:30-4:30 p.m.
Get some quality one-on-one time with your little one at a fun baking class. In preparation for Valentine’s Day, teams will be decorating a two-layer cake while learning different piping techniques. Bakers will also decorate their own topper for the finishing touch on their sweet treat. // Fran’s Cake & Candy Supplies: 10927 Main St., Fairfax; $115

Winter Tree Detectives

Sunday, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Put on your detective caps for an afternoon of investigation. Spend the day learning to identify trees in the park with clues like buds, bark and fruit. // Ellanor C. Lawrence Park: 5040 Walney Road, Chantilly; $7

Hunt for Washington

Through Feb. 25
Celebrate George Washington’s birthday with a scavenger hunt. Block out some time to scour the city and uncover clues about Washington and Alexandria. Just print out the clue sheet at home and put your skills to the test. // Various location in Alexandria; free
