7 events to attend with the family this weekend

Enjoy the first weekend in October with the family at one of these fun, festive events.

As we turn the calendar to a new month, the weekend is the perfect time to ring in October. Whether you want to attend some fall festivities or catch one last outdoor movie, these seven events will keep the whole family entertained throughout the weekend.

Temple Hall Farm Pumpkin Patch

Thursday through Oct. 31, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Take a family trip to Temple Hall Farm for the first weekend of the pumpkin patch. Spend the day scouring the patch for the biggest pumpkin, then make your way to the jumping pillows and slides for endless entertainment. // Temple Hall Farm Regional Farm: 15855 Limestone School Road, Leesburg; $10 per person (includes a pumpkin)

Fall Fest 2020 at Reston Farm Garden Market

Fridays-Sundays through Nov. 1, 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m.
Get in your fall festivities this weekend at the Reston Farm Garden Market. Let your kids spend the day jumping on moon bounces and playing with the farm animals, while you browse through the market. Tickets for the event are for 90 minutes to ensure social distancing.  // Reston Farm Garden Market: 10800 Baron Cameron Ave., Reston; $20 per child, $5 per additional parent

Painting at the Pond

Friday, 4-5 p.m.
Practice your art by the pond. Take a walk around the water with a naturalist, then pick out a spot, break out the watercolors and paint what you see. This event is recommended for ages 9 and up. // Ellanor C. Lawrence Park: 5040 Walney Road, Chantilly; $10

Picasso in the Park

Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Grab your art supplies and head to the park for some inspiration. Join other artists (at a safe distance) as you capture nature with your pencils, paints and pastels. Registration is required. // Alum Spring Park: 1 Greenbrier Drive, Fredericksburg; free

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Saturday, noon-1 p.m.
Spend your Saturday outdoors by participating in a family scavenger hunt. This monthly event allows attendees to roam the garden as they search for nature and themed objects. // Green Spring Gardens: 4603 Green Spring Road, Alexandria; $5 per person

FREE Movie At The Ballpark: Indiana Jones

Saturday, 5-9:30 p.m.
Enjoy a movie at the ballpark. Stop by the Fredericksburg Nationals’ stadium with your chairs and blankets for a special showing of Indiana Jones. Only the first 1,000 people will be admitted for the movie. // Fredericksburg  Nationals: 42 Jackie Robinson Way, Fredericksburg; free

Blacksmithing Demo

Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Get the behind-the-scenes look of a blacksmith’s work at Colvin Run Mill’s demonstration. This free program will show the whole process of making tools and utensils, from the forging to the hammering. No reservations required. // Colvin Run Mill: 10017 Colvin Run Road, Great Falls; free
