New butterfly-themed park opens in Annandale

The Fairfax County Park Authority’s newest park features a lesson in butterfly metamorphosis.

As playgrounds slowly reopen across Northern Virginia, children have gotten to swing and slide outside once again. Now, the Hidden Oaks Nature Center in Annandale has unveiled another option for outdoor play. The Fairfax County Park Authority recently announced the addition of a butterfly metamorphosis-themed playground to the existing Annandale community park.

Kids will find caterpillars to climb on, get to explore a chrysalis and pretend to fly with larger-than-life monarch butterflies. There are two sections of the new park, one for 3- to 5-year-olds, while the other section is geared toward 6- to 12-year olds.

“Oh, I wish I were a kid again!  The new playground is delightful.  Children can play to their heart’s delight and learn about the mysteries of butterflies at the same time,” said Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross in a recent press release. “Annandale Community Park has long been a popular, family activity spot, but the new amenities make it even more attractive and accessible.  A terrific reinvestment in our community, thanks to the voters who supported park bond referenda.”

In addition to the new butterfly park, Hidden Oaks Nature Center also recently renovated its picnic shelter, adding ADA-accessible grills and restrooms, plus more picnic tables. The existing swing set also got a fresh coat of paint. The park’s tennis courts were also resurfaced.

On the horizon, the park has plans to expand and improve the nature center. // 4030 Hummer Road, Annandale
