Fairfax County launches new virtual parent cafe

Hosted by the Parenting Education Programs staff, the new Virtual Parent Cafe has an African American cultural focus.

By Holly Gambrell August 24, 2020 at 3:52 pm

Parenting is tough, but parenting during a pandemic is something that is unprecedented and makes being a father or mother all the tougher. The staff from Fairfax County’s Parenting Education Programs wants to help.

Launching on Thursday, Sept. 10, residents will get to partake in the county’s new Virtual Parent Cafe, a tool the county hopes parents use to learn from each other as they grow in their parenting skills. The cafe is open to all Fairfax County parents or guardians with children ages 0 to 18 years old, and this specific parent cafe is focused on African American culture. The county also started a weekly Spanish language parent cafe in July, and offers an English-speaking parent cafe as well.

During Virtual Parent Cafe meetings, staff members moderate the conversation, leading discussions while allowing parents to problem solve around topics like routines, self-care, discipline, praise, expectations and social media.

The virtual parent cafe schedule is as follows: Mondays from 7:45 to 9:15 p.m. for English-speaking families; Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for Spanish-speaking families; and Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for African American families.
