Whoever said going to the movies is a rainy-day activity certainly never lived in Northern Virginia during the summer months, where the humidity levels rarely fall below 65%.

When the kids need a little air conditioning and popcorn to keep them happy, here’s what’s showing in local theaters in the weeks ahead.

Spider-Man: Far From Home
Opening July 2, PG-13
Marvel has done it again with this continuation of the tale told in its latest film, Avengers: Infinity Wars. After the death of his mentor Iron Man, Peter Parker (Spider-Man) travels to Europe with his classmates to find a little peace-of-mind. To his surprise, evil goes beyond the United States and he’s forced to tackle it all in this action-packed, sci-fi film featuring young stars Tom Holland and Zendaya.

The Farewell
Opening July 12, PG
Directed by Chinese-American filmmaker Lulu Wang, The Farewell is an emotional, comedic journey centered on her own personal experience. The film tells the story of how Wang’s family, all played by actors, decided to lie to her grandmother about the fact that she is terminally ill. While the story line is true and ironically comical, it also leaves audience members to ponder deeper themes of death, truth and love as a whole.

The Lion King
Opening July 18 (select theaters) & July 19, PG
This summer marks the return of a story we all know and love, with a modern twist. Thanks to the remarkable cinematic technology that has unfolded since The Lion King‘s original debut in 1994, this remake will make you feel like you’re walking alongside Simba as he makes his way back home after fleeing the kingdom. Plus, the cast features recognizable voices like Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Beyoncé and more.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold
Aug. 9, PG
Dora the Explorer has turned from cartoon to real-life character in this entertaining story, great for children. For the first time in her life, Dora is tasked with leaving the jungle and exploring new territory: high school. On a class field trip, though, she and her three classmates are kidnapped and tasked with finding her missing parents in a hidden civilization unlike anything she’s ever seen before.

The Angry Birds Movie 2
Aug. 16, PG
It’s been three years since the first movie was released, and now it is time for Red, Chuck and Bomb to return to the big screen in this computer-animated action comedy. While the main characters are living happily among their former enemies at the start of the movie, trouble finds them once again. Watch as the Angry Birds defend their home and fight off evil in this action-packed screenplay.

Playmobil: The Movie
Aug. 16, PG
For the first time ever, the Playmobil brand toys are coming to life on the big screen. Bring the kids and let them be entranced by the scene: a land full of toys that inspires human characters, Charlie and Marla, to embark on a magical journey of adventure, where they inevitably find their true individuality.
