HopSkipDrive family rideshare service arrives in Northern Virginia

Created by moms for parents everywhere, the K-12 transportation company is like an Uber for your kids.

As all parents know, it can be a whirlwind to coordinate the entire family’s schedule, and who’s picking up which child from where and when. Enter HopSkipDrive, a family rideshare service that promises to get your children safely from point A to point B.

The service launched in the region in late March, but the company’s roots are in California and Colorado (founded in 2014). Northern Virginia marks HopSkipDrive’s first East Coast location, and joins the road with other local ridesharing app, Zoomee Rides.

Servicing children between the ages of 6 and 17, HopSkipDrive allows parents to monitor their kids’ rides from start to finish, via its app. The drivers, known as CareDrivers, follow specific safety protocols and go through a comprehensive screening process.

Most of the drivers are mothers themselves, and every CareDriver has at least five years of caregiving experience and has passed a 15-point certification process, including fingerprinting, background checks against criminal and sex offender databases and driving record checks through the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Rides are offered throughout Northern Virginia and expand into DC, and may be reserved as little as eight hours in advance, or by 7 p.m. the night before for morning rides. HopSkipDrive then matches the request to a CareDriver, and sends parents a picture of the CareDriver’s profile to share with their children before the ride.
