Cold War Museum
A baby boomer’s growing-up memoir: The Cuban Missile Crisis, the Bay of Pigs, JFK’s assassination, the Peace Corps history, Woodstock and the Summer of Love, the Space Race, the sinking of the Thresher, the Berlin Wall timeline and much more. Open weekends and by appointment in Vint Hill.

9/11 Memorial
The solemn tributes on the site of the Trade Center destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001, draw Americans seeking understanding and closure. Tours are guided by New Yorkers who have a personal history with the fateful day that changed America forever. 911memorial.org

The tour of White Oak Lavender Farm includes a guided walk of the farm gardens with information on growing lavender, distilling and cleaning the flower buds. Add a tour, tasting and lunch at CrossKeys Vineyards. (Note: CrossKeys Vineyards are not accessible by wheelchair and require a lot of walking.)

Fallingwater
Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Fallingwater is considered the most unique home in the world. Designed in 1935 for the Kaufmann family, Fallingwater was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. It is among the Smithsonian’s Life List of 28 places to visit before you die.

Funky Baltimore
Charm City is a great day’s outing, and the American Visionary Art Museum expresses Baltimore’s quirkiness best, offering magnetic appeal to the 60-plus set. AVAM is dedicated to self-taught “outsider” artists and displays such wonders as a boat made out of toothpicks and a 55-foot whirligig. AVAM has received the Urban Land Institute’s award for excellence.
