The National Gallery of Art on the National Mall nudged New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art out of the top spot for most visited U.S. museums in 2022, and ranked among the top 10 in the world, according to The Art Newspaper’s Visitor Figures survey.
The annual survey reviews attendance at the top 100 art museums around the world.
The Musée du Louvre in Paris ranked No. 1 worldwide with more than 7.7 million visitors, followed by the Vatican Museums, and the British Museum.
The National Gallery of Art ranked 7th in the world, with almost 3.3 million visitors. The Met in New York came in at No. 8.
The museums in the top 10 accounted for nearly 40 million visits, the survey found.
The National Museum of African American History made it into the top 50 at No. 46, with just under 1.1 million visitors. The Art Institute of Chicago ranked No. 51, and the Getty Center in Los Angeles, 55.
The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery took the 57th spot.
