NoVA Firefighters Save Two Cats from McLean House Fire

The fire displaced residents and caused an estimated $62,500 in damages.

By Jackie DiBartolomeo April 6, 2022 at 4:46 pm

Firefighters rescued two cats from a house fire in McLean on Monday evening.

Crews from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department and the Arlington County Fire Department arrived at the house in the 6800 block of Churchill Road at around 8:30 p.m. Monday night. Upon arrival, they found fire showing through the windows of the two-story home. Crews quickly extinguished the fire, which was limited to one room.

Two cats were rescued by the fire crews and EMS tended to their injuries at the scene. Fairfax Animal Control took the cats to a local vet where they are expected to make a full recovery, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement.

Two residents were home at the time of the fire. One resident was transferred to the hospital with minor injuries and will make a full recovery. There were no firefighter injuries reported.

Fire investigators determined the fire started when one of the residents accidentally spilled kerosene while refilling a kerosene fueled lamp in a first-floor bedroom. When she turned on the lamp, the kerosene ignited. The fire was determined to be accidental in nature, caused by the ignition of kerosene that spread to nearby combustibles.

The smoke alarms were working and were activated after the fire was found. Red Cross assistance was offered and declined.

The fire displaced two residents. The damages of the fire are approximately $62,500.
