In search of a new book to crack open on the beach? How about a new show to binge-watch? Check out these new books, television shows, and music — they’re all from local writers, actors, and musicians, and are sure to keep you entertained.

BOOK

Loot by Tania James

In this gripping historical fiction, set in 18th century India and Europe and written by a George Mason professor, a woodcarver crafts a large tiger automaton for Tipu Sultan, then must journey to recover it from the British forces who seized it.

TV

The Crowded Room on Apple TV 

Eight-year-old Thomas Parobek of Fairfax appears alongside stars Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried in this psychological thriller miniseries. Through a series of interviews, the show uncovers the protagonist’s involvement in a New York City shooting.

BOOK

Happiness Falls by Angie Kim

This novel from a NoVA author, equal parts mystery and a family drama, follows a biracial Korean American family in Virginia as they uncover what happened to their missing husband and father. Out August 29.

MUSIC

“Crime” by Melissa Quinn Fox

Don’t miss the latest single from this Northern Virginia singer-songwriter, whose captivating lyrics and vocals earned her three 2023 Wammie Awards for Best Country/Americana Artist, Album, and Song. 

BOOK

A Murder in Ashwood by Robert Brighton

Immerse yourself in the scandal and glamour of the Gilded Age with this murder mystery. It’s the second novel in the Vienna author’s Avenging Angel Detective Agency Mysteries, which can be read in any order.
