Get an up-close look at the Mystics’ new Rebel jersey

The new threads call to DC’s history of marches, the 19th Amendment, and the U.S. Constitution.

The Washington Mystics’ new Rebel jersey, which you’ll see them wearing on the court July 3 and later this season, represents more than just a fashion update. The WNBA calls it “a rallying cry to stand up for women’s rights.” Here’s what it all means.

1. The Patch

A new logo celebrating the WNBA’s 25 years of existence is meant to honor all the legends who got today’s players here.

2. The Word

It’s hard to miss the four letters emblazoned across the front of the jersey. According to the team, they stand for a lot, like defending equality, justice, and rights for all. “In the district of change,” proclaims the Mystics’ website, “we rise up.”

3. The Ribbon

That tan trim is inscribed with the first line of the 19th Amendment, the one that granted women the right to vote in 1920. On the jersey’s back, the strip curves to represent the path often taken by marches through the streets of Washington, DC, on the way to the National Mall.

4. The Colors

The Mystics’ standard navy blue intertwines with red, the color of the 2017 Women’s March on Washington, and “parchment beige,” a nod to the U.S. Constitution.
