You have a free day in NoVA. How do you spend it?
A hike in Great Falls, followed by shopping in Old Town and a great Korean meal, then end the day at Wolf Trap for live music.
What do fans usually say to you?
Most viewers want to know how early I have to wake up to go to work. There’s always a gasp when I answer: 2:15 a.m.

Sitting side-by-side with Yang every weekday morning, Gilchrist has been an early morning fixture on televisions across the region since 2010.
What do you love about NoVA?
I love the mixed pace. You can easily find quiet time in a park along the Alexandria waterfront, busy restaurants in Shirlington and Clarendon, or family-friendly time in Woodbridge.
What do fans usually say to you?
“You’re in my bedroom every morning!” To which we both usually laugh before I say, “Thanks for having us over!”
Favorite arts destination?
I love a trip to Shirlington to catch a show at Signature Theatre.

What’s your favorite restaurant for a date night?
I love The Majestic in Old Town.
Favorite place to spend time in NoVA in the summer?
I love to bike along the Potomac toward Mount Vernon and hike Great Falls. It’s a peaceful escape from work and the city.
Out of all the stories you’ve covered in NoVA, what stands out the most?
Live coverage every year of the Marine Corps Marathon. We get to the starting line in the cold dark at 5 a.m. before the runners. By 10 a.m., I’m pumped up from the energy and excitement of the finishers. Watching and cheering on thousands as they achieve a life goal is gratifying.

Born in DC and raised in Arlington, Gentzler has been with NBC4 for 30 years this July, anchoring both the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts.
Favorite restaurant for a date night?
I work the night shift! I love St. Elmo’s Coffee pub in Alexandria. The Carlyle in Shirlington is fun for family dining.
You have a free day in NoVA. How do you spend it?
Long bike ride from DC to Old Town, then stop for coffee, lunch, a little shopping.
Anything new in NoVA on your must-visit list?
I’m looking forward to visiting the new, improved Ballston Commons. When I was a kid, we went to Parkington all the time. And it was the tallest building in the neighborhood back then. So much has changed!
Weathercaster
Winner: Doug Kammerer
Kammerer has been predicting snow days as NBC4’s weatherman since 2010, but he’s been here much longer. He was raised in Herndon, which gives him a personal perspective on the region. “I love feeling like I’m home in NoVA,” he says. “Just driving around when I do my school talks or [host] events in the area, it feels nice to be from the area.”
What do fans say to you?
People normally ask me the weather and tell me that they love that I have fun during the news.
What’s your go-to family-friendly restaurant?
I really enjoy taking my kids to Clyde’s in Reston Town Center. There is always something on the menu for all of us. I also love the food court at Tysons. That place is huge and has something for everyone!
Out of all the stories you’ve covered in NoVA, what stands out the most?
I’d say I had the most fun out at Cox Farms. I really love that place. We did a great weather segment out there and I loved the reaction of the other visitors. My family had a great time as well. We can’t wait to go back.
