If you watched Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday night, you likely saw the very Las Vegas-level production that preluded the actual game between the Las Vegas Golden Knights and the Washington Capitals. Well, the Golden Knights may have the theatrics, but do they have an entire town named after them?
Following the Capitals advancing to the Stanley Cup Final on May 23, Mayor Robert Zoldos and the Town Council of Lovettsville voted to officially change the name of their town to Capitalsville for the duration of the final. The vote passed. It’s not just a symbolic gesture either; signs all over town now read “Capitalsville.”
In addition to the signage, all citizens, organizations and businesses are being urged to “Rock the Red” by displaying or wearing red. The town also has extended the invitation to all Caps fans to visit Capitalsville during the final and Lovettsville thereafter, hoping to establish a kind of epicenter for the fan base outside of the District. A viewing party for Game 3 on Saturday at the town’s Walker Pavilion is being planned, though details are still being worked out with the Capitals organization, per Zoldos.
Zoldos has been quoted in hoping that this name change will help boost the economy of his town. It has already helped boost the publicity, as many regional news outlets have made note of Virginia’s “newest” town; so has Sen. Tim Kaine in a social media post last week.
