Dawson Terrace Park to undergo $1.5 million renovation
The 3.5-acre Dawson Terrace Park will lose its two small multi-use courts, but in return gain a larger, lighted court that can be used for high school basketball, volleyball, hopscotch and four square games. A $1.5 million contract approved by the Arlington County Board on April 21 puts the Bennett Group in charge of the renovations, which also include updates to picnic tables and trails.
Prince William water improvements underway
Through April 30, Fairfax Water will be working to replace a portion of pipe that provides Prince William County Service Authority and Virginia American Water customers with drinking water. There is another line that delivers water from the Griffith Water Treatment Plant to area residents, so officials do not foresee any interruptions to existing drinking water service.
City of Alexandria and Arlington County recognized for Environmental Excellence
On April 5, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality recognized the Four Mile Run Tidal Wetland and Living Shoreline Restoration Project with the 2018 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Silver Medal. The City of Alexandria and Arlington County worked together on both the Four Mile Run Tidal Wetland project, which sought to protect the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay in 2016, and the 2017 Arlington Living Shoreline Restoration project, which used native meadow plants to replace stones along five acres of stream banks.
Construction kicks off at Monticello Park
Monticello Park, located at 5315 Guinea Road in Burke, will feature a playground, a place for dogs to roam off of their leashes, multi-use areas and trails upon completion of the $1.5 million project in September 2018. Alexandria’s Avon Corporation began work this month.
Grant to bring two parks more than 1,000 trees and shrubs
Thanks to a grant from the Virginia Department of Forestry and matching funds from the Arlington Department of Parks and Recreation, more than 1,000 trees and shrubs will be planted along 3.9 acres of Four Mile Run in the Bluemont and Benjamin Banneker parks. The seedlings will help to improve the overall health of the surrounding ecosystem.
Fairfax Farmers Market to open May 3
Fairfax’s Government Center Farmers Market will kick off its 2018 season with a Thursday, May 3, grand opening ceremony at which Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova and other officials will make an appearance. The market will open 30 minutes prior to the 3 p.m. ceremony celebrating the market’s new location: the green space in front of the Government Center Building. Through October 25, the market will be open every Thursday from 2:30-7 p.m.
Bucknell Manor Park Playground to host ribbon-cutting ceremony
The old playground at Bucknell Manor Park was destroyed to make way for two entirely new play spaces for children of various ages, and to celebrate the completion of the $100,000 project, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. on May 6.
Public invited to attend meeting concerning Mount Vernon RECenter renovations
The Mount Vernon RECenter will be getting a few updates in the near future, and the public is invited to weigh in on those changes at a meeting on May 6 at 6 p.m. The design team will share their ideas on the changes they deem necessary, as well as outline a potential construction schedule.
