Spray park and memorial garden planned for Del Ray
A triangle-shaped parcel at the corner of Mount Vernon and Commonwealth avenues has big plans in the future. Del Ray Gateway, a group of community and business members, along with the City of Alexandria, are working to turn this piece of land into a spray ground with a memorial garden honoring Nancy Dunning, who was killed in her home by serial killer Charles Severance in 2003. Currently, the space is occupied by an abandoned pool and a small park. The community partnership has already received $48,000 in grant money and has fundraising events scheduled to raise more to reach $42,000 by June.
$15 million tennis facility headed to Prince William County
The United States Tennis Association Mid-Atlantic outpost, currently headquartered in Reston, is making a move to 46 acres in Prince William County with plans to open a 105,000 square-foot, state-of-the art facility by 2023. The facility, which will be located across from the George Mason University Science and Technology campus on Freedom Center Boulevard, Manassas, will host tournaments and year-round events. Construction is expected to begin in 2020 and will have indoor and outdoor courts, pavilions, locker rooms and more. The association will also look to sell some of the land to other sports and wellness businesses, Tara Fitzpatrick-Navarro, CEO of the association, told the Washington Business Journal in early February.
Tysons Corner roadways expanding
The redevelopment of the Tysons Corner area is continuing, this time with a $950,000 study approved by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to look into widening Route 7 between the Beltway and Route 123, which would include implementation of bus lanes and stations. This study fits into the regional plan of rapid bus transit along Route 7 through Alexandria, Falls Church and Tysons.
Riverside Square remakes a stretch of Route 7 in Ashburn
Monument Realty, the purveyor of multiple mixed-use properties across the Metro-D.C. area, is constructing its latest offering in Ashburn at Riverside Square, a 100,000 square-foot retail shopping center. The Burn website reports that the center, located between Ashburn Village Boulevard and Lexington Drive north of Route 7, will include retail and restaurants, drive-thru eateries and a gas station with possible inclusion of a day care center or office building and an auto center.
