DC’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix and first IndyCar race is just around the corner. The event will take over the streets around the National Mall on August 22 and 23. It will feature drivers from the NTT IndyCar Series, and officials expect the event to draw around 140,000 spectators a day.
For those planning to attend or those in downtown DC, be aware of road closures, parking restrictions, and Metro schedules.
Race Security
The race is designated a SEAR 1 (Special Event Assessment Rating) event with strict security measures, according to Axios. There will be increased law enforcement presence, including FBI, Secret Service, DC police, and U.S. Park Police. Visitors should expect TSA-style checkpoints, a clear bag policy, and an extensive prohibited items list.
Road Closures
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) released a traffic advisory for the event, with parking, travel, and curb lanes already being affected. Additional restrictions are planned post-race to assist with the buildout and breakdown of the event.
Currently, all roadways remain open, but streets will begin to close as the race gets closer. Restrictions include parts of Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue, and streets near the Capitol and Smithsonian museums. Officials are encouraging commuters and visitors to take public transportation. Extra WMATA service will be available, and riders should anticipate bus detours.
