DC’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show will be bigger than ever this year. As the city prepares to celebrateAmerica’s 250th birthday, organizers have announced that this year’s event is anticipated to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest fireworks show.
Organizers are planning for more than 30 minutes of pyrotechnics, nearly twice as long as last year’s show, Axios reported.
Freedom 250, which is organizing the event, has hired Pyrotecnico to run the fireworks. Pyrotecnico told Axios it plans to break the world record. The current record was set in the Philippines in 2016 and used 810,904 fireworks. It lasted just over an hour.
And organizers are preparing for the event with high levels of security. The July 4 celebration received a National Special Security Event designation from the Department of Homeland Security, the highest possible level, The Washington Post reported.
This is the first time a July 4 celebration has received an NSSE designation. The decision was due to the event’s “significance, size, and attendees,” a Secret Service spokesperson told the Post.
This isn’t the only big celebration going on in the district this summer. The Great American State Fair will run June 25 to July 10 with carnival rides, live music, and cultural exhibitions.
And, in anticipation of America250, the Smithsonian is reopening the Castle and Arts and Industries Building and hosting special exhibits at the American History Museum. Plus, Northern Virginia will have its own slate of America250 events.
