5 Ways to Celebrate National Bike Month in Northern Virginia

Trade four wheels for two at these cycle-friendly events.

May is National Bike Month, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate across Northern Virginia —whether you’re commuting to work, exploring local trails, or joining fellow cyclists on community rides. These events make it easy to ditch your car this month.

Walk, Bike & Roll to School

May 6

Hosted by the National Center for Safe Routes to School, this nationwide initiative encourages students and families to walk, bike, or roll to school together. While the official day is May 6, many local schools are holding events throughout the month focused on safe biking, community engagement, and active transportation. Multiple area locations

Bike to Work Day

May 15

One of the region’s most popular cycling traditions returns with dozens of pit stops planned throughout the area. Organized by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, Bike to Work Day celebrates bike commuting with free T-shirts, refreshments, giveaways, and community events at pit stops across Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland. Multiple area locations

Ride of Silence

May 20

Cyclists around the world will participate in this annual solemn ride honoring cyclists who have been injured or killed while riding on public roads. Riders cycle no faster than 12 mph in a show of remembrance and to raise awareness about bicycle safety and sharing the road. Local participants can join a Manassas-area ride hosted by the Manassas Trail and Cycling Club or host their own event. Multiple area locations

Tysons Trek & Treat

May 1–29

Explore Tysons on two wheels during this month-long challenge running May 1 through 29. Participants can bike to destinations throughout Tysons, track their progress, and earn prizes, including a Velotric Fold One Plus e-bike and Experience Tysons gift cards. The self-guided event is designed to encourage residents and visitors to discover the area’s growing bike network and local businesses. Multiple area locations, Tysons

Fairfax City Themed Rides

May 1–31

Explore Fairfax with a series of themed self-guided rides. Cyclists can choose from routes like the Tree City Bike Ride, the Public Art Bike Ride, and the Fairfax Circle to Metro Bikeshare Loop — all designed to highlight different parts of the city while encouraging outdoor activity and local exploration. Multiple area locations, Fairfax
