Gas Prices Continue to Climb in Northern Virginia

See how prices in the commonwealth compare to national averages.

By Maggie Roth May 5, 2026 at 12:10 pm

Virginia drivers are feeling more pressure at the gas pump. And fuel prices continue to rise. The average fuel cost in Virginia has risen to above $4 per gallon, according to AAA data. Prices are the highest they’ve been since late July 2022.

Gas prices have been impacted by the ongoing war in Iran and instability in the Strait of Hormuz; about 20% of the world’s oil typically travels through the strait.

In Virginia, the average cost on May 5 is $4.202 per gallon for regular gas. That’s up from $4.178 on May 4, $4.045 a week ago and $4.058 a month ago. Last year, it was $3.01 a gallon.

And it’s not just Virginia. National averages are even higher at $4.483 per gallon. That’s up from $4.11 a month ago and $3.165 a year ago.

Virginia’s prices are slightly below the averages in neighboring Maryland and Washington, DC, which are at $4.323 and $4.530, respectively.

Gas Prices in NoVA

Within the state, prices vary significantly by region. The NoVA area has a reported average of $4.287 per gallon for regular. More rural areas have slightly lower prices, such as Frederick County ($4.095) and Culpeper County ($4.087).

Here’s what prices NoVA counties are seeing:

  • Alexandria: $4.418
  • Arlington: $4.405
  • Fairfax: $4.408
  • Fauquier: $4.229
  • Loudoun: $4.260
  • Prince William: $4.229

Hunting for gas stations with lower costs? GasBuddy posts prices at specific stations, based on reports by users, so you can find the pumps with the lowest prices in your area. In Loudoun County, for example, Dash In in Chantilly reported $3.99 per gallon. In Fairfax County, the Wawa in Chantilly reported $4.05.
