Major Airline Ending Operations at Dulles

Your flights may be impacted starting early this summer.

By Maggie Roth March 13, 2026 at 4:55 pm

NoVA travelers, be aware: Southwest Airlines has announced that it will discontinue service to Washington Dulles Airport (IAD), effective June 4. It will also discontinue flights to Chicago O’Hare.

Southwest said in an announcement today that the service changes are part of the airline’s “ongoing efforts to refine its network.”

While flights through Dulles will end June 4, Southwest said it is committed to serving the Washington-area market. It said it is the “largest carrier in the Washington area” and will continue to serve both Reagan National (DCA) and Baltimore Washington International (BWI) with a combined 271 departures.

Travelers with existing reservations at IAD or O’Hare are eligible for refunds, or can rebook or travel standby within 14 days of their original travel day through nearby airports, WTOP reported.

Impacted IAD employees will be eligible to apply for positions across Southwest’s network, the news release said, including at BWI and DCA.
