U.S. News & World Report has released its latest rankings for public and private elementary schools. And among public schools in Virginia, Springfield’s Sangster Elementary ranked second. Old Dominion School in Virginia Beach was ranked No. 1.

U.S. News ranked 1,088 schools in Virginia. According to the outlet, “Schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation, and how well they prepare their students for high school.”

Sangster Elementary scored an impressive 99.9 out of 100. U.S. News noted that 98 percent of students scored at or above the proficient level for math. And 94 percent scored at or above that level for reading.

The ranking noted that, “Compared with the district, the school did better in math and better in reading, according to this metric. In Fairfax County Public Schools, 71 percent of students tested at or above the proficient level for reading, and 72 percent tested at or above that level for math.”

Northern Virginia had several other public schools in the Top 10. Arlington County’s Arlington Traditional scored the No. 4 spot on the list, followed by Haycock Elementary in Falls Church at No. 5. Vienna’s Wolf Trap Elementary was No. 7, and Kent Gardens Elementary in McLean ranked No. 9.
