Driver Alert: Fairfax County Parkway Crews are Closing Popes Head Road This Week

Expect delays from Monday to Thursday for work related to the Fairfax County Parkway project.

By Jamie Gholson July 21, 2025 at 11:22 am

Popes Head Road (Route 654) will have lane closures this week as crews work on the Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road interchange project, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said.

From Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24, between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m., there will be one lane with alternating traffic via flagging west of Fairfax County Parkway.

Drivers should expect delays and advised to use alternative routes.

The Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road interchange project plans to replace the traffic signal with an interchange. The interchange will feature triple roundabouts that will allow traffic to flow freely with the two new bridges over Fairfax County Parkway.

The project also includes reconstructing the Fairfax County Parkway Trail, constructing a shared-use path linking the Parkway Trail to the future Patriot Park, and installing a sidewalk along the north side of Popes Head. Additionally, the VDOT plans to extend Ladues End Lane to the new roundabout at Popes Head Road and build a short segment for the Shirley Gate Road extension.

Drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians should use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert for new traffic patterns and limited distractions.

The interchange project is scheduled to finish in late 2026.
