Three NoVA Suburbs Are Ranked Among Wealthiest in the Country

Three Virginia and two Maryland localities were among the list of the 50 wealthiest suburbs.

A new report from GOBankingRates names five DMV suburbs among the 50 wealthiest in the country. And three of these — including the suburb with the highest ranking in the area — are located in Northern Virginia.

In Northern Virginia, McLean, Wolf Trap, and Vienna made the list. Two Maryland suburbs, Potomac and Bethesda, were also named.

McLean ranked the highest among the five, landing at the No. 12 spot nationally with a mean household income of $365,000. Wolf Trap was No. 20 with a mean income of $316,810. Vienna was No. 45, with $273,768.

On the Maryland side, Potomac was ranked No. 27 nationally, with a mean income of $304,509. Bethesda was at No. 38, with $290,678.

The report analyzed the mean annual income of qualifying cities with at least 5,000 households. The localities had to be part of a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) but could not be listed as a principal city of that MSA. It used data from the 2023 U.S. census, 2022 five-year American Community survey, Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI inflation calculator, and Zillow research data and home value index.

This 50 wealthiest suburbs ranking comes shortly after another GOBankingRates study named South Run as the “richest small town in Virginia.”
