NYC-Based Bakery Maman Opens in Mosaic District

Head here for brunch and pastries endorsed by Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart.

Maman, a New York–based bakery and cafe chain, has opened its first Virginia location in the Mosaic District.

Maman serves French-inspired brunch, pastries, and coffee from a trendy space full of vintage décor and eye-catching floral elements. It’s located at 2920 District Ave., Ste. 150, next to Arielle Shoshana and near the MacMillan Whiskey Room (in the space that was previously Oath Pizza).

The first Maman opened in 2014 in SoHo, New York. Founders Benjamin Sormonte and Elisa Marshall started the brand with inspiration from their mothers’ kitchens in the south of France and North America (Maman means “mother” in French.)

It has since grown to include 45 locations, primarily in the New York area. There are seven in the DC region, but the Mosaic store is the first in Virginia. The bakery anticipates expanding to Old Town Alexandria and Courthouse in Arlington later in 2025, FFXNow reported.

Maman gained attention when Oprah Winfrey named its cookies as one of her “Favorite Things” in 2017.

And that’s not its only celebrity connection — right now, the bakery is offering a selection of seasonal Martha x Maman dishes, created in collaboration with Martha Stewart. Those include an iced tea with red berries; a kitchen sink cookie with dark chocolate, coconut, sour cherries, apricots, and pecans; a creme brulee sugar bun; a tomato tart; and a turkey cobb sandwich.

Beyond the Martha collab, special menu items include a range of sweet and savory options. There’s a seasonal daily quiche, eggs ratatouille on weekends, and an everything croissant and salmon sandwich. Plus you’ll find pastries like a peaches and cream danish and a blueberry lavender crumb cake. Specialty coffee and tea beverages include a blueberry caramel iced latte and a shaken papaya lemonade.
