Fairfax County Warns of Harmful Algae at Burke Lake

People and pets should avoid contact with the water until further notice.

By Debbie Williams June 13, 2025 at 10:49 am

Fairfax County Park Authority has issued an alert about a harmful algae bloom in progress at Burke Lake. FCPA says a blue-green algae bloom has been identified, and that people and animals should avoid contact with the water. This includes swimming, wading, and letting pets enter the lake.

According to FCPA, “blue-green algae can produce harmful toxins that pose serious health risks to people and animals.”

FCPA is telling visitors to Burke Lake to keep pets away from the shoreline and do not allow them to drink from the lake. And that individuals with respiratory sensitivities should avoid prolonged exposure near the water.

The Virginia Department of Health says most algae are not harmful. However, the agency cautions that “some types of algae in Virginia can be dangerous.  Algae species in fresh and salt water may multiply rapidly when environmental conditions are favorable for their development.  The great number of algal cells in the water results in what is called an algal bloom.”

As of now, Burke Lake Park is still open. Fairfax County Park Authority is monitoring the situation and coordinating with state and local health officials. It will provide updates on the Park Alerts section of its website.
