Great American Restaurants to Open Stupid Good BBQ in Springfield

The popular NoVA-area restaurant group will now offer slow-cooked barbecue in a fast-casual setting.

A new, fast-casual barbecue joint is on its way to Springfield from the restaurant group behind area eateries like Coastal Flats and Sweetwater Tavern. Great American Restaurants has announced that Stupid Good BBQ will have its grand opening in Springfield on December 5.

The new spot will be at 6125 Backlick Rd., next to Best Buns Bakery & Burgers and across from Mike’s American — two other GAR restaurants.

The restaurant’s name is in honor of Dwight Fuller, a “member of the Great American Restaurants family,” according to a news release from the group. “Known for his passion for good food, Dwight would often declare ‘That’s stupid good!’ when tasting something truly exceptional. The new restaurant embodies that same spirit with its unforgettable flavors and dedication to quality.”

With a casual setting and counter-service ordering, Stupid Good BBQ will serve a selection of slow-cooked meats. That includes smoked turkey, brisket, pulled pork and chicken, spareribs, and jalapeno cheddar sausage. Several of the proteins will be available as sandwiches.

The signature side dish is a whole baked potato, smashed and topped with butter, sour cream, cheese, and green onions. There are classic barbecue sides like cole slaw, potato salad, cornbread, and baked beans. Chili also graces the menu, to be served alone or atop macaroni and cheese, fries, or a smashed potato.

“We’re excited to bring our love of delicious BBQ to Stupid Good BBQ,” said Jon Norton, CEO of Great American Restaurants. “Our team created a menu that brings out the best in BBQ, using our dedication to quality ingredients, scratch-made cooking, and some twists on classic comfort food. We can’t wait to share this experience with our guests.”

For those looking to feed a crowd, Stupid Good BBQ will offer catering services for groups from 10 people to more than 500.
