5 Hair-Raising Haunted Trails and Houses in Virginia 

Experience terror and thrills at these Northern Virginia’s top haunted trails.

Are you brave enough to face demons, dark forests, and plenty of jump scares? These haunted trails deliver thrilling, creatively designed experiences that will keep your heart racing. From twisted fairy tales to adrenaline-pumping escape rooms, these destinations are sure to offer a terrifying adventure.  

Fields of Fear 

Fridays–Saturdays through November 2, 7:30–11 p.m. 

Cox Farms offers four thrilling attractions that promise a mix of fun and frights. The Cornightmare, the farm’s original haunted trail, is packed with spine-chilling surprises from live haunters. For even more scares, hop on the Dark Side Hayride or venture into The Forest, where a half-mile walk through a dark trail will have you dodging scary encounters scares and giant spiders. When you need a break from the fear, head to The Firegrounds for the huge slides, dancing, karaoke, and fire trick performances. Tickets are available online only. 15621 Braddock Rd., Centreville, $30–$40 

Madhaunter’s Madhouse 

Fridays –Sundays through November 2, times vary 

Named Virginia’s “Top Haunt” by Frightfind for five years, this haunted attraction isn’t for the faint of heart. The eerie trail is packed with scare actors dressed as clowns, ghouls, and skeletons, ensuring plenty of terrifying encounters. New this year is a nightmarish escape room. Parking is free, and the experience is recommended for visitors aged 13 and up. 37658 Legard Farm Rd., Purcellville, $30 

Twisted Tales of Terror 

Fridays–Sundays through November 2, times vary 

This haunt takes you on a spooky trail through the remnants of Lorton’s historic Workhouse prison, where beloved fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel are turned into twisted horrors. Small groups are guided by a ringleader through an eerie carnival, with grotesque characters and creepy surprises around every bend. When you’re done, head to the Groove Yard for a Haunt DJ mixing Halloween classics, spooky-themed cocktails, and food trucks. There’s a sensory-friendly trail on October 20.9518 Workhouse Way, Lorton, $25–$30 

Haunted Nightmares 

Thursdays–Sundays through October 31 , except October 11, times vary  

Hill High Farm offers thrills for all ages, with less scary haunts during the day for younger visitors. After 6 p.m., the fear factor ramps up as live actors take over, ready to deliver spine-tingling scares. Beyond the haunted trails, you can challenge yourself in the escape room or face the chilling “buried alive” simulator. 933 Barley Ln., Winchester, $16–$20 

Darkwood Manor Haunted House 

Fridays–Sundays through October 31, times vary 

Each year, the DarkWood Manor unveils a new story with original characters and immersive scenes.  This year’s theme, “Phantom Forge” has unleashed demons and restless spirits from the nether, bringing a terrifying new chapter to life. The experience lasts 15 to 20 minutes. It is recommended for guests aged 10 and up. Tickets are only available online.104 N. Hawksbill St., Luray, $20
