Leave the Baby Deer Alone

The fawns are left alone deliberately by their mothers.

By Colleen Kelleher May 16, 2024 at 7:48 am

White-tailed fawns look adorable all curled up. You’ll see the newborns this month and next on lawns, in gardens, or in bushes and tall grass near your home.

And they may not be with their moms. When you see them, leave them alone, Fairfax County police reminds residents. They are not abandoned. Don’t feed or pet the fawns. Don’t let kids and pets near them.

Does leave their fawns for extended periods to forage and keep predators from finding the little ones, Fairfax County police said.

The mothers return several times a day to feed or move the fawns and will be wary of people near their babies.

It’s against the law to rehabilitate deer fawns in Fairfax, Prince William, Arlington, Loudoun, and Fauquier counties. Virginia wants to reduce Chronic Wasting Disease, a neurologic disease that affects deer and is fatal.

“Given that fawns can no longer be rehabilitated in Fairfax County, it is especially important to make every effort possible to leave healthy fawns where they are found to have the best chance of survival,” police advise in a news release.
