An Arlington man involved in a domestic dispute with his wife is in police custody after he came to the Springfield day care where she worked and fired shots that wounded her and another employee, Fairfax County police said.
Julio Pascual Sejas, 41, of Arlington, is in custody. Fairfax County police said on Facebook that its Fugitive Tracking and Apprehension Unit apprehended him after seven felony warrants had been issued after the shooting. The warrants included two counts of aggravated malicious wounding, two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and three counts of shooting into a school building.
Deputy Chief Brooke Wright said the suspect came to the West Springfield KinderCare, a preschool and day-care center on Bauer Drive, and wanted to speak to his wife.
“She did not open the door to him, and he then proceeded to shoot three rounds through the door,” Wright said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
The gunfire wounded two women, but the injuries were not life-threatening.
The day-care shooting happened with more than 70 children inside the building.
“The children were not within sight of this incident,” Wright said.
“I am so relieved that kids were not harmed today because we are talking too much about kids and gun violence that’s happening,” Wright said.
Police received the call about the shooting from inside the day care at 2:14 p.m.
Wright said on Wednesday that it was unclear whether the couple involved in the dispute were married or estranged.
