You’re in a good place when you’ve reached your destination, but your journey has just begun. Rockingham County is truly Mother Nature’s playground. Four rivers run through the county making for some great blue waves for avid paddlers and calmer waters for those who prefer to float and take in the scenery. Hiking, biking, and quality family time are waiting for you.

River Adventures

If you’re looking to paddle down class 2-3 rapids, Mayo River State Park-Boiling Hole at Anglin Loop/Mayo Beach Road has the adventure you are looking for. Don’t miss the picturesque waterfall on Fall Creek.

Madison River Park is the perfect place for paddling, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and tubing. Guided tubing trips are available through Mad Town Tubing and Dan River Outfitters. Or laze the day away on one of the park’s hammocks and watch the world go by.

Lake Reidsville, where life is better at the lake, offers boating, kayaking and canoeing, camping, and disc golf. View the Lake Reidsville brochure and discover your next adventure!

Hiking, Biking, and Family Fun

Enjoy a 3-mile mountain bike trail at Farris Memorial Park in Mayodan. The trail ride takes you through switchbacks, over rock gardens, and across small streams. Most of the trail runs through hardwood and mixed pine forest. Bring your own bike or you can rent a bike for a nominal fee. There are even youth-sized bikes available! Try your hand at disc golf, a family favorite!

Connect with nature on the Chinqua Penn Trail, just west of Reidsville. This 1.7-mile loop trail is part of the NC Birding Trail, which has over 190 species identified. Traverse old-growth forest — it follows the fence lines of pastures where a prized cattle herd graze. Stop and smell the wildflowers — mountain laurel, rhododendron, and springtime flowers abound. Count the newborn calves, watch and listen for feathered friends, and enjoy the welcoming faces you’ll meet. Leashed, well-behaved four-legged friends are welcome!

Experience the new Butterfly Trail at Smith River Greenway in Eden. This 1.7-mile trail features 70 butterfiles scattered amongst the trees. Keep the family entertained on the trail with a scavenger hunt — can you find all 70? Enjoy butterfly photo ops that are perfect for your social media feeds!

Freedom Park in Eden offers something for everyone in the family! There you will find a splash pad, children’s playground and skate park, horseshoe and volleyball courts, nature trails, and picnic tables and pavilions for when it is time to rest and refuel.
