What to Do on Presidents Day Weekend in NoVA

Wish George Washington a happy 292nd birthday and check out these events.

By Maggie Roth February 12, 2024 at 2:03 pm

When you live in a place that’s as full of history as Northern Virginia, Presidents Day is a pretty big deal. The day was originally established to commemorate George Washington’s birthday on February 22 (this year marks his 292nd) but eventually expanded to recognize all presidents. Celebrate the patriotic holiday by making a stop at one of George Washington’s old homes, cheering along to a festive parade, or just enjoying the long weekend.

Presidential Family Fun Day

February 17, 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m.

Take a tour through all the past presidents at the National Portrait Gallery’s family day. In addition to guided tours of the exhibits, there will be artmaking and writing activities. National Portrait Gallery: 800 G St. NW, Washington, DC

Free Admission at George Washington’s Mount Vernon

February 19 and 22

The first president’s historic estate will be free to visitors on both Presidents  Day and Washington’s birthday. Visitors can stop by to tour the mansion, witness the official presidential wreath laying at George Washington’s tomb, and listen to the “music of the revolution.” 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy., Mount Vernon, free

George Washington Birthday Celebration Parade

February 19, 1–3 p.m.

Old Town Alexandria will celebrate George Washington’s birthday with its annual parade. This year’s theme is “George Washington: Alexandria’s Original Living Legend,” and the Living Legends of Alexandria will serve as the grand marshals. Check the parade route here.

George Washington’s Birthday Celebration at Ferry Farm

February 19, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

George Washington’s more popular abode might be Mount Vernon, but his childhood home is right nearby, too. At Ferry Farm, visitors can celebrate his birthday with activities like stone-throwing contests and colonial games and enjoy birthday cupcakes. 268 Kings Hwy., Fredericksburg, $5 for adults, free for kids

Rocknoceros Presidents’ Day Concert

February 19, 11 a.m.

Bring the kids out for a fun concert with this kid-friendly band. Rocknoceros has been entertaining in venues around the DMV since 2005 and has won 10 WAMMY Awards. It’s a great way to keep the little ones entertained during a day off from school. Jammin Java: 227 Maple Ave. E., Vienna, $10
