The opening of the first academic building on Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus has been delayed to spring 2025 due to “supply chain issues,” according to a news post from Virginia Tech. The building was originally expected to open in August 2024.
“Our vision remains unchanged. We are building a community perfectly positioned to connect talented students with Northern Virginia’s growing tech ecosystem,” said Lance Collins, vice president and executive director of the Innovation Campus.
University officials announced the delay at a town hall meeting for faculty and staff, where leadership “acknowledged that the delay will have an impact on faculty, staff, and students” and “committed to offering comprehensive support and ensuring regular updates” with town meetings and news updates.
When completed, the Innovation Campus will be a 3.5-acre campus in North Potomac Yard near the Potomac Yard–VT Metro Station. The building experiencing delays is an 11-story, 300,000-square-foot structure that is the first of three planned buildings.
This site will be a location for instruction, research, offices, and support spaces for graduate computer science and computer engineering programs. The building also will contain experiential learning environments such as research and testing labs and maker spaces designed to “enhance the Virginia Tech experience.”
In the coming fall semester, computer science and computer engineering master’s degree students will continue to attend classes at Virginia Tech’s existing Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church.
