Pinkies Up! 6 Elegant Afternoon Tea Experiences in NoVA

Don your pearls and get ready to pass the scones. It’s time for a holiday tea party.

By Maggie Roth December 11, 2023 at 10:42 am

Is there anything more elegant than afternoon tea? With the lovely table settings, delicate little treats, and, of course, tea, the midday ritual makes for a splendid occasion, especially around the holidays. These tea shops and restaurants are hosting holiday tea services around NoVA.

Crest Hill Tea Room

This Christmas tea offers an assortment of seasonal teas, including a chocolate-peppermint tea and a “White Christmas” tea with white chai, lemongrass, ginger, pineapple, and coconut. Tea services include soup, sandwiches, and either a cinnamon bun scone or a Christmas scone with dark cherry, white chocolate, and nutmeg. $34.99 per person, 6488 Main St., The Plains

Crossroads Tea Room

At this elegant Fairfax Station tearoom, you can take in the Dickens Holiday High Tea special through December 24. It includes soup, brie in flaky pastry, tea sandwiches, fresh baked scones, and desserts, including mince pies. Reservation required. 10806 Wickersham Ln., Fairfax Station

Elden Street Tea Shop

Waiting in line to see Santa at the mall is so blasé, don’t you think? Instead, greet the jolly fellow at a tea party in Herndon on December 17 or 24, where little ones can write letters to Santa, enjoy live music from carolers, and indulge in sweet treats, tea, and hot cocoa. $49.95 per person, 714 Pine St., Herndon

Oatlands Historic House and Gardens

The Carriage House of this historic estate makes a picturesque setting to enjoy a traditional tea. Holiday-themed teas will take place throughout December, complete with scones, sandwiches, sweets, and Oatlands’ own tea blend. After tea, take a stroll around the grounds to see the garden and mansion. $70 per person, 20850 Oatlands Plantation Ln., Leesburg

The Ritz-Carlton Tysons

For an opulent afternoon outing, head to the Ritz-Carlton Tysons for an afternoon tea service. Occurring every Saturday and Sunday year-round, the afternoon teas include canapés, desserts, and tea, with live piano music for entertainment. Add to the luxury with a glass of Champagne, a cocktail, or a mocktail for an additional price. Reservations are required. Starting at $79 per person, 1700 Tysons Blvd., McLean

The Tea Cart

Downtown Berryville’s traditional British tearoom hosts a variety of teatime experiences, from classic high teas to whimsical themed events. For the holidays, make a reservation for a Nutcracker-themed tea that’s available through December 31. You can book the experience for 1 to 7 people, either a family-friendly or adult-only event. Reservations require a deposit of $25 per person. $55 for adults, $40 for kids, 16 W. Main St., Berryville
