A Bealeton pilot died Sunday afternoon when his single-engine plane crashed in Fauquier County.
Virginia State Police Monday afternoon identified the pilot as Simmie A. Adams, 62.
The 1975 Beechcraft plane went down just before 4 p.m. near the intersection of Midland and Ebenezer Church roads in the Midland, according to Sgt. Brent Coffey, a Virginia State Police spokesman.
According to the police, the preliminary investigation indicates the pilot had been trying to land at the Warrenton-Fauquier Airport when the plane struck several trees. It crashed into a field and caught fire.
Adams was the only person on the plane. No one on the ground was injured, Coffey said.
The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the plane crash, as is standard procedure.
