Spring Hill Rec Center to Get Solar Arrays, Other Upgrades to Become Energy Efficient

The upgrades include solar arrays, geothermal heating and cooling, and LED lighting changes.

McLean’s Spring Hill Rec Center will become more energy efficient with upgrades that will reduce the recreation center’s electric consumption by 19 percent and its gas consumption by 29 percent.

Fairfax County officials broke ground on the project Wednesday afternoon.

Solar arrays, a geothermal heating and air conditioning system, and LED lighting upgrades are part of the project. The solar photovoltaic arrays are expected to provide 13 percent of the building’s yearly electricity, Fairfax Now reports.

Additionally, CMTA, Fairfax County’s energy service company contractor, will coordinate the replacement of the the pool dehumidification units at the recreation center at 1239 Spring Hill Rd.

Improvements will be made to the building’s automation systems.

“The project represents a significant step forward toward meeting the county’s goals for carbon neutrality in its facilities, fleet vehicles and operations, including 50 percent of county electricity from renewable sources by 2040, as outlined in the county’s Operational Energy Strategy,” a news release said.

The county said CMTA is making energy, lighting, and mechanical upgrades at 21 county facilities. Upgrades have been done at Cub Run Rec Center, South Run Rec Center, and the City of Fairfax Regional Library.
