These 6 Outdoor Family-Friendly Activities Make For A Great Summer Weekend

Get in some quality family time with outdoor movies, storytime, and pool time.

By Michele Kettner July 21, 2021 at 2:23 pm

With the summer slowly coming to a close and the start of school around the corner, it’s time to take advantage of those final easy-going weekends. Here are six family-friendly activities to add to your summer schedule.

Outdoor Family Storytime

Friday, 10:15-10:40 a.m.
Head out of the house for this week’s story time. Pack a bag with snacks and a beach towel for a fun morning of stories and songs on the lawn of the library. Ashburn Library: 43316 Hay Rd., Ashburn; free

Creek Adventure Wagon Ride

Friday, 5 p.m.
Start your weekend fun at 5 o’clock on the dot. Head over to the park for a family wagon ride along the water. The hour-long adventure will let your little ones explore the stream and learn about the different creatures while keeping cool. Ellanor C. Lawrence Park: 5040 Walney Rd., Chantilly; $50 per family

Cardboard Regatta & Late Swim

Friday, 5:30-8 p.m.
Let your kids test out their building skills at the pool. Each team will be using cardboard and duct tape to try and build an unsinkable boat. Your engineers are sure to build up an appetite during the competition, so pizza and an ice cream park will be on hand to help the creative juices flow. Middleburg Community Center: 300 W. Washington St., Middleburg; free

Doctor Dolittle: Movies Under the Stars

Friday, 9-11 p.m.
The doctor will see you now. Grab your lawn chairs and blankets for a hilarious showing of Eddie Murphy’s Doctor Doolittle under the summer stars. As you stake out your spot, pick up a goodie bag with programs and special offers from local retailers. Woodland Park Crossing: 12960 Highland Crossing Dr., Herndon; free

Arts Family Day

Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Make a family day out of exploring the arts at Mount Vernon. Travel back to the 18th century to see all of the poetry, music, and visual arts that Washington and his friends would have enjoyed. After you check out the estate, make your way to the family hub for fun activities and take-home craft kits. George Washington’s Mount Vernon: 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy., Mount Vernon; included with admission

Baby Goat and Bunny Snuggle & Bottle Feed

Sunday, 10 a.m.-noon
If your little one is an animal lover, this is the place to spend your Sunday morning. In addition to the goats and bunnies, the farm is home to the cutests alpaca, llama, donkey, and more. Little Goat Farm at the Lake: 8954 Burwell Rd., Nokesville; $40
