5 outdoor activities to help get in your weekend workout

Break a sweat outdoors with a hike, 5K, or bird watching walk.

With the warm spring weather coming early this week, it is the perfect time to take your workout outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. Whether you want to get in a 5k or take in the birds with a walk through the forest, these five outdoor activities are the perfect way to break a sweat this weekend.

Woodcock Watch

Friday, 5:45-7:15 p.m.
Combine your love for bird watching and hiking at this outdoor event. Attendees will spend the evening trying to catch a glimpse of the American Woodcock, one of the stealthiest birds. Guests are asked to bring a mask, bottle of water, flashlight, and portable chair. // The Clifton Institute: 6712 Blantyre Rd., Warrenton; $10

2021 St. Patty’s Leprechaun 5k, 10k, & 1M

Saturday, 7:30-10:30 a.m.
Get some extra luck from the Irish at the annual St. Patty’s Leprechaun run. Take in the beautiful views of the greenery and river as you get in your steps for the day. A virtual run option will also be available.  // Old Mill Park: 2216 Caroline St., Fredericksburg; $15-$45

Raven Rocks and Dirt Farm Brewing

Sunday, 10 a.m.
Enjoy the early spring weather with a hike to Raven Rocks. The 4.8-mile trek is listed as a moderate trail that also includes river views. After your hike, head over to Dirt Farm Brewing for a refreshing drink. // Harry Byrd Hwy., Bluemont; free

Walney Creek Walk

Sunday, 3 p.m.
Take it easy on Sunday and take a relaxing walk through the woods. The one-mile trek along the creek features a lesson on plants and animals in the park and how humans have played a role and interacted with the waterway throughout the area’s history.  // Ellanor C. Be Hoppy 5K/10K/Half Marathon

Through April 4
Get in the Easter spirit with a fun run. After registering, participants just need to pick a trail, lace up their shoes, and run. All runners will get a commemorative shirt, finisher certificate, and bib number. Proceeds from the event will help support the Anti-Cruelty Society. // $29.99
