Massanutten announces opening day for its winter season

The Shenandoah resort invites you to come for skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, ice skating and more.

By Kelly Magyarics December 15, 2020 at 12:31 pm

If you are dreaming of a White Christmas, you’re in luck.

Massanutten Resort, a 6,000-acre playground in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, just announced that its 2020/2021 winter ski season kicks off on Saturday, Dec. 19–great news for snow sports enthusiasts.

Guests are encouraged to book lift tickets either online or through the resort’s app; tickets are available on a first-come-first-served basis 10 days in advance. New this season is the Last Chair Special, which includes a slope-use ticket for $20 and rentals for $20; it’s available from 3 to 5 p.m. when slopes close at 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the slopes close at 9 p.m. (starting Dec. 26.) You can also guarantee a spot on the mountain with a Season Pass available at a specially-designated ticket window at the resort, which requires no advance reservation. Skiing and snowboarding lessons are offered one-on-one, either as private or semi-private (guests from the same traveling party) for at least the first half of the season and must be purchased by phone at 540.289.4921.

Capacity and session times for snow tubing and ice skating have been reduced to 90 minutes and 60 minutes respectively, to allow for physical distancing and a fun and safe experience for all. Northern Lights Tubing on select late-nights sessions on Friday and Saturday nights will feature music and brightly-colored lights to illuminate the 900-foot-long tubing hill.

The resort has created a bucket list of winter activities to encourage guests to branch out and try something new, and is also expanding its outdoor live music line-up, which will occur in wide-open spaces. Ski and Stay packages start at $273, with discounted 8-hour lift tickets for up to eight people, so you can eek out as much winter fun as possible.

“We couldn’t be more excited to begin hitting the slopes,” said general manager Matthias Smith in a statement. “Our team has been working diligently to welcome guests for an unforgettable winter and without question, [with] safety is at the heart of it all, [and] we look forward to seeing snow sports enthusiasts and vacationers alike soon!”
