Keep Your Kids’ Sports Skills Sharp with new “Sport in the Box” Kits

With many sports leagues canceled, Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation is now offering soccer and field hockey rental kits to help youth athletes practice their skills.

While many recreational sports leagues were canceled this summer—and it’s looking like many fall sports at school will be too—that doesn’t mean kids don’t still want to keep up with their skills. The competitive and social aspects of team sports, not to mention the chance to get some fresh air, remain important, and organizations across Northern Virginia have continued to make sports a priority throughout the summer.

Fredericksburg Parks & Rec is making it even easier to stay game-ready with its recently introduced soccer and field hockey “Sport in the Box” kits. For a fee, youth athletes can rent a box that includes equipment specific to both sports (soccer ball or field hockey stick and ball), plus cones to set up drills. Boxes also include handouts with coaching instruction points and skill development drills, and even a “Sport in the Box” T-shirt to practice in.

Soccer players should look for topics to include dribblinging, trapping, passing and shooting, while field hockey players will work on dribbling, defense, offense and flicking skills. Coaching topics that are included in the kit are age-appropriate for whomever rents the box.

Kids can bring the boxes home to practice in their yard or they may take them to Fredericksburg’s Dixon Park, where goals for each age division have been set up.

Registrations are being accepted through Friday, July 31. Soccer boxes are $40 and can be modified for soccer players ages 4 to 12. Field hockey boxes are $50 and are appropriate for ages 6 to 12. Parents can sign up at the Fredericksburg Parks and Rec website here.

Sport in the Box kits will be available for pickup on Friday, Aug. 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dorothy Hart Community Center or the following Monday, Aug. 31 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
