Nonprofit No Kid Hungry, a national campaign fighting to end childhood hunger in America, and Nationals Philanthropies, the charitable arm of the Washington Nationals, have been working hard during the pandemic to give to communities in need.
As part of both organizations’ COVID-19 relief efforts, they have partnered together to issue matching grants of $25,000 to Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia, and Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland, totaling $50,000 for each school district.
The funds are being used to feed students during the pandemic, serving approximately 35,000 meals a day through curbside pickups, pop-up meal sites and bus-route delivery.
According to No Kid Hungry, one in seven American children lived with hunger before the pandemic, and now the number may grow to about one in four.
“The uncertainty caused by the pandemic is particularly unsettling for the most vulnerable members of our community, especially when regular avenues to support services are unavailable,” said Tal Alter, CEO of Nationals Philanthropies in a recent press release. “It is our responsibility to ensure we do everything we can to meet the needs of our neighbors. Paramount among these basic needs is the access to nutritious food.”
