11 tweets that show the chaos at Dulles and Reagan airports

As news of travel bans and other coronavirus prevention measures spread, travelers hurried home—and now, the airports are becoming ghost towns.

By Holly Gambrell March 16, 2020 at 4:04 pm

The coronavirus pandemic has the entire region—and the globe—doing its best to stop the spread of the virus, including avoiding air travel. In the past week, Dulles International Airport and Reagan National Airport went from being overly busy to eerily quiet. Here are 11 tweets that show the difference.

Reagan National Airport in DC was packed this morning. This direct flight to Phx is more than 90% full. About one screen every 2 rows watching WH press conference.

There’s confusion across the country over extent actionable steps should be taken to match the alarm.

Flying back to DC on Thursday. Dulles Airport is probably going to be a living scene from Dante’s Inferno.

:( Dulles Airport yesterday. Took 10 hours to get through supposedly. Americans returning before Trumps ban starts. Forgot to plan for it! pic.twitter.com/saNBLCCtRH

@Dulles_Airport @CDCgov @NIH @thepointsguy @GovernorVA just landed Dulles from Europe. No social distancing. We are in lines jammed together. Staff don’t have masks or gloves. pic.twitter.com/KOY1SlXLKb

Some irony: @zoom_us, a company several universities will be using to transition to online classes, is being advertised in the security bins at @Reagan_Airport, where many DMV college students are traveling through to return home for the semester because of #coronavirus pic.twitter.com/Sg3nHLvrHD

I’m at Dulles airport it has about 10% of the people that’s normally here on a Monday. A ghost town in comparison.

This is #dullesairport in DC. It is a ghost town. 5 people going through security at the same time as me. This is frightening. Take the quarantines seriously. #covid_19 #quarantine @ Washington Dulles International… https://t.co/VykTs1ZAjn
