Best of NoVA 2019: Sports Personalities

For NoVA sports fanatics, these three personalities are as important as the game’s final score.

Local Professional Athlete

Winner: Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals
In 2018, Ovi led the Capitals all the way to the Stanley Cup and he continues to dominate on the ice. The world’s best hockey player also happens to live right in our backyard. So we asked him, what do you love about living in NoVA?

Where do you live in NoVA?
I currently live in McLean.

When you get recognized in public, what do fans usually say to you?
I love our fans. They are always so respectful and great to me. Most of the time they ask for my picture, which is great.

Favorite place to dine post-practice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex?
We usually eat at the rink following practice. My wife also cooks, so I’m lucky!

You have a free day in NoVA. How would you spend it?
Usually at home with my family, or take the family out to Tysons Mall or Georgetown Waterfront.

Sports Anchor

Sherree Burruss (Photo courtesy of NBC4)

Winner: Sherree Burruss
Burruss covers all things sports in the region for NBC4, including the Redskins for the first time last season. “That was my first year covering and traveling to every game,” she says. “I had a wonderful opportunity to build relationships with the players this past season.”

Favorite restaurant for a date night?
Founding Farmers in Tysons. Its menu is so diverse and we love that it is more of a local restaurant, not a chain.

Favorite place to workout?
Walking around the streets of Old Town Alexandria. There is something special about walking around and taking in your surroundings instead of driving.

You have a free day in NoVA. How do you spend it?
Walking around aimlessly at Wegmans in Ashburn. I am obsessed with Wegmans and this location is so large and has a great wine selection. One of my favorite parts about covering the Redskins in Ashburn is stopping by Wegmans to pick up lunch.

Local Professional Coach

Scott Brooks (Photo courtesy of Washington Wizards)

Winner: Scott Brooks, Washington Wizards
Scott Brooks has been coaching the Wizards since 2016. When he’s not in the arena, he loves spending time in both NoVA and DC. We asked him to name a few of his favorite go-to hot spots.

Favorite place to grab a drink post-game?
A margarita at either RPM or Zaytinya.

Favorite place to take out-of-towners?
The Lincoln Memorial.

You have a free day in NovA. How do you spend it?
Walking with my wife along the water in Old Town, and then grabbing dinner.
