Derby Daze: 5 Parties around NoVa to celebrate the Kentucky Derby

Tip your hat, place your bets or just raise your glass—May 4 will be the derby’s 145th race.

Simple Changes Annual Kentucky Derby Party
May 4, 4-8 p.m.
Simple Changes Therapeutic Riding Center will host its annual derby party, where guests can dress to impress and enter the hat contest, or simply enjoy the gourmet buffet, silent auction and open bar. KO Distilling’s Inaugural Derby Day Celebration
May 4, 3:30-7:30 p.m.
With one freshly made mint julip and a raffle ticket in hand, the night is just getting started at KO Distilling’s tasting room. The Churchill Downs-inspired event will welcome guests with a free “Place-a-bet” raffle, a derby hat competition, spirit tastings, distillery tours and more. // KO Distilling: 10381 Central Park Drive, Manassas; free admission, food and drink prices vary

Talk Derby to Me
May 4, 4-8 p.m.
Bowties, seersucker and pocket squares will surely be the style at Lottie Russell’s derby day party, although the attire is optional. The event will feature live music from the Top5 Band, and hopes to raise awareness of the importance of brain tumor research initiatives and advocacy programs. Derby Day Sip, Shop & Socialize
May 4, 1-6 p.m.
A soirée fit with libations, live music and leisure shopping, the Manassas Park Community Center will welcome guests ages 21 and older for its Spring into Action fundraiser benefitting Elks Families in Crisis. The event will also offer a best-dressed contest and raffles throughout the evening. // Manassas Park Community Center: 99 Adams St., Manassas Park; $40 general admission

Virginia Gold Cup
May 4, Gates open at 10 a.m.
OK, so we’ll admit that this isn’t a watch party for the Kentucky Derby, but it may be even better: It’s a horse race, right here in Northern Virginia. The Virginia Gold Cup, held annually in The Plains, features multiple races throughout the day, including the Virginia Gold Cup (the sixth race of the day) held at 4 p.m. // 5089 Old Tavern Road; prices vary
