Alzheimer’s disease, and other forms of dementia, impact 5.7 million people in the U.S., per the Alzheimer’s Association. While recent news shows that there is some progress being made in ways to treat the memory loss disease, many families are looking for the best way to care for their loved ones that are diagnosed with it now, not down the road.

One such option is a memory care facility. Memory care services, often provided through a senior living center, strive to create environments for individuals with dementia where they can feel comfortable, establish routines and receive treatments that assist with their memories. Thankfully, there are a number of memory care centers throughout Northern Virginia, each with their own unique offerings.

Sunrise Senior Living
A specially designed neighborhood within Sunrise’s facilities for people living with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other forms of memory loss, Reminiscence offers memory-focused activities and Life Enrichment Managers who are trained in special memory care techniques. Reminiscence looks to remove any unnecessary stress by having specific memory care areas and resident suites near living and dining areas for easier navigation and social interaction. // Multiple NoVA locations

Arden Courts
The pair of Arden Courts locations in NoVA are solely focused on memory care. As new residents arrive at Arden Courts, their individual schedules are carefully crafted through an assessment, which sets the specifics for care, including directly involving the family if desired. Also, families that are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s themselves can take advantage of respite care at Arden Courts, allowing for Arden to take over care for a temporary period. This not only helps the family recharge their batteries, but new interactions can be beneficial for someone dealing with dementia. // Arden Courts of Fair Oaks: 12469 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway, Fairfax; Arden Courts of Annandale: 7104 Braddock Road, Annandale

The Crossings
The Crossings’ memory care neighborhood, known as Harmony Square, helps to put families’ minds at ease through a strong line of communication and a secure, state-of-the-art space. The Harmony Square staff has regularly scheduled meetings with families to establish open communication and provides supervised access to the complete range of amenities at Crossings facilities, as well as specialized services part of the Harmony Square community. //Multiple NoVA locations

Tribute Senior Living
Every staff member that works at Tribute residences—chefs, housekeepers, concierge and nurses—have been certified by the National Institute for Dementia Education. This training allows the entire staff to interact with memory care residents in ways designed to help them deal with their symptoms, as well as engage with them on a more individual basis. // Tribute at the Glen: 4151 Old Bridge Road, Woodbridge; Tribute at One Loudoun: 20335 Savin Hill Drive, Ashburn

Brookdale Senior Living
Created more than 25 years ago, Brookdale communities use the well-tested Clare Bridge concept for treating dementia. The program supports maintaining identity and a strong sense of self, and does so by providing the opportunity for residents to utilize life skills and talents. Clare Bridge also has a special dining program that helps residents combat difficulties using utensils and dealing with uncertainty about new foods. // Brookdale Arlington: 3821 Wilson Blvd., Arlington; Brookdale Lake Ridge: 3940 Prince William Parkway, Woodbridge

Spring Hills Senior Communities
There are a pair of special programs offered for residents living in memory care units at Spring Hills (or Poet’s Walk) facilities. C.A.R.E. (Company, Associates, Residents, Expectations) categorizes residents according to their cognitive and emotional demands, with their level of home care based off of that, and Signature Touches is tailored programming that seeks to enrich the mind and spirit while promoting physical health as well. // Multiple NoVA locations

Other senior living communities that offer memory care services include: HarborChase, Greenfield Senior Living, Marian Manor and Brightview Senior Living.
