From a tribute to Judy Garland to meditating in a tea shop: What we’re looking forward to this week, Jan. 7-13

This week, the editors at Northern Virginia Magazine are looking forward to honoring Judy Garland, meditating, open mic night and getting a blowout.

A star is reborn
I’m sure many of you went out to the movies to catch Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star is Born. While I enjoyed their latest rendition of the famous Hollywood story, I still have an affinity for the Judy Garland version from the 1950s. Signature Theatre is honoring the career of Garland with a special show (Jan. 8-26) with Signature favorite performers singing some of her best work, including “Get Happy,” “The Man That Got Away” and “Over the Rainbow.” -MB // Signature Theatre: 4200 Campbell Ave., Arlington; $38

Breathe, sip, repeat
I never really understood why breweries host Pilates classes, but this—meditation in a tea shop—this, I get. The New Year started out pretty rough with my tribe (nothing like a baby with a fever to bring in 2019) and so I’m looking for ways to find my calm. Elden Street Tea Shop hosts two workshops: Chair Yoga & Tea Meditation on Jan. 9, where students will learn practices to use back at home, work or the commute, and Mindful Yoga & Tea Meditation on Jan. 13, a more traditional mat-based session. Each class ends with a tea meditation and I am here for that. -SG // Elden Street Tea Shop: 714 Pine St., Herndon; $18-$28

Beer and a show
Although Friday nights are a great time to sip away, by the time Thursday comes around, I’m already pining for a few rounds. I’ve made it a goal to explore as many wineries and breweries as possible in NoVA this year, and in a few days you can catch me drinking what’s on tap at Sinistral Brewing Co. The brewery hosts open mic nights every second Thursday of the month, which gives me the perfect excuse to check it off my list this week. -HG // Sinistral Brewing Co.: 9419 Main St., Manassas; Free

Dry January
With two young children, I don’t get out much for cocktails these days—so the typical New Year’s resolution of abstaining from alcohol during January doesn’t really apply to me. But there is another kind of “dry January” I’m planning to partake in this month. The newest outpost of Drybar recently opened at Ballston Quarter and I’m super psyched to get over there for a blowout. Not only will I walk out with pretty hair, the stylists also give you a scalp massage and you get to watch chick flicks and read trashy magazines while you’re in the chair. This is a New Year’s resolution I can handle.  -KB // Drybar: 4238 Wilson Blvd., Suite 1160, Arlington
