How to Pick the Perfect Peach
How can you tell if a peach is ready to be picked? Choose peaches that are mostly yellow, not those with much green. A peach will ripen after being picked, but it’s important to harvest peaches that give a little when squeezed, so don’t pick a peach that is too firm. If you do though, don’t worry. Peaches can be fully ripened after picking by storing them in a bowl at room temperature, or by keeping them in a paper bag. To slow down the ripening process, put them in the refrigerator.
What to Bring Peach Picking
When going peach picking, it’s important to plan ahead by calling or visiting the farm’s website to check regulations and crop availability, and to bring cash. Not all farms accept credit cards, and if they do, they may not accept the one you have. Also, even though it’s hot this time of year, always wear closed-toe shoes when picking your own produce. Some orchards may only be a short walking distance from the parking lot, but others may require a wagon ride to get there.
Remember that where there is fruit, there will be bugs, too, so be sure to bring bug spray and check for ticks upon departure. As for other creatures, while some farms are pet-friendly, others discourage dogs in the orchard.
