Monday, changes to Arlington parking meters’ prices and hours changed. Now, meters are free after 8 p.m. rather than 6 p.m., and long-term meters will cost $1.50 per hour while short-term meters will cost $1.75 per hour.

Monday, the Arlington County Police Department unveiled a bright pink “SoberRide Vehicle” BMW (seized after a drug conviction) that they hope will remind passers-by to think twice before getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. The car will be on display in popular nightlife spots and at community events.

Jarrod Ramos, the 38-year-old Laurel man who shot and killed five Capital Gazette employees, sent threatening letters to the Annapolis newspaper and a law firm prior to the Thursday attack. According to the Baltimore Sun, the letters were dated June 28, the day of the shooting. The building in which the Capital Gazette and other businesses reside reopened on Monday.

Alexandria federal Judge T.S. Ellis III asked prosecutors to look into how to reduce 37-year-old Frederick Turner’s 40-year sentence for dealing methamphetamine, the mandatory minimum punishment, which Ellis believes is excessive.

House Bill 1609 went into effect on Sunday, July 1, allowing the Virginia Racing Commission to determine regulations on slot machines and off-track betting facilities to be used for horse races, like those that will take place at Colonial Downs when it reopens in 2019.
