Things to do in Winchester, Virginia

This rural town can go up against the major shopping hubs we are used to in Old Town Alexandria as well as other area downtowns due to a recent renovation that has brought new life to the region.

Patsy Cline Historic House
A Nashville voice that crossed over to the mainstream in the 1960s, Patsy Cline was a legend whose music still lives on today. While in Winchester, take time to tour the home she lived in from 1948-1957. The home displays some of her personal belongings and is still decorated the way it was when she and her family lived there.

Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum
The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum is a tactile delight with exhibits covering four levels of exploration, a rooftop garden and observation deck among them. Exhibits include everything from music floors, climbing walls and a roller coaster alley to an apple packing station and paleo park. However, exhibits aren’t the only attraction of the museum as special events happen weekly and monthly.

Downtown Walking Mall
Head to this spot to peruse 60 shops ranging from antiques and fine furnishings to gift items and local artwork. After you pop in the stores, let the kids play on the splash pad and grab a bite at any of the dozens of restaurants in the area. And if you’re there on the first Friday of the month, take in an assortment of music and art.

Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum & George Washington’s Office Museum
With just a 10-minute walk between the two, you can see these two historical figures’ museums in one visit. Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum showcases memorabilia and some of his staff’s personal items, while George Washington’s Office Museum, a building the first president used in the fall of 1755 through the winter of ‘76, exhibits some of Washington’s personal items.
