Iota Club closing its doors; Parking spots turn into mini parks tomorrow and National Christmas Tree Lighting Lottery Ticket dates are announced

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Thursday, Sept. 14.

By Editorial September 14, 2017 at 7:39 am

After 23 year in business Iota Club is set to close. With the renovations happening at Market Place Commons owners Jane Negrey Inge and Stephen V. Negrey said they made the hard decision to say goodbye instead of temporarily relocate and then move back and pay higher leasing costs. The last concert is Sept. 30. (ArlNow)

PARK(ing) Day is tomorrow, a movement that started to reclaim public space, and there are many pop-up spots and a permanent one in Rosslyn to take advantage of. Alexandria will have seven mini parks taking over the asphalt, while Arlington is planning for six. Rosslyn, however, is going in full force at the corner of N. Oak St. and Wilson Blvd. You’ll be able to get free coffee and bagels courtesy of Allspice Cafe & Catering. And there will be live music and games throughout the day (cornhole, Giant Jenga and foosball), plus you’ll get 10 percent discount cards to Rosslyn restaurants. This is also a preview for the permanent parklet that will open in the spring.

Loudoun County Supervisor Geary Higgins calls for a compromise for location of the Confederate statue on the courthouse lawn, saying it should stay but should also get some kind of context. In light of the events at Charlottesville, the county board has discussed this issue and only four of the nine-member board have said they would support relocating or removing the statue. Fairfax County looks to add more residential space in Reston as the Department of Planning and Zoning noted approximately two dozen sites for additional development in a proposed zoning ordinance amendment. A public hearing will be held on the issue on Sept. 25.  (RestonNow)

National Mall Christmas Tree Lighting lottery ticket dates have been announced. The lottery opens Oct. 12 at 10 a.m. and closes Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. Notifications will be sent out Oct. 30 for the Nov. 30 event. (Nationaltree.org)
